Christy’s Story

“Christy is a 17 year-old high school junior in Texas. Her eyes are red, and some days she feels like there is a rash all over her body and it’s not from the pollen in the springtime air. Her mom and college counselor at school have been all over her to “figure out what major she will pursue in college”. Needless to say, she has not slept soundly in a while. She is frustrated, not because she doesn’t want to figure it out. She just doesn’t know how. If someone would take the time to walk her through the process and simplify the steps, a huge monkey would jump off her back. And please don’t make it a long painful process.

One day, Christy reads on a flier at school about a 20 minutes assessment that will help her identify her major! She decides to take advantage of the opportunity. The assessment is short, fun to take, and there is no essay to write. What does she have to lose?  The counselor is knowledgeable and understanding as she guides her through the process of matching her skills and interests in determining a major that is ideal for Christy.

With the monkey off her back, Christy can now relax. The stress is gone. What A Major Relief!

What??? Could it be that easy???

Christy finds that the assessment from A Major Relief and her session with Donna, her new personal Career Counselor, has radically helped her find a major that fits her interests, goals, and objectives. Donna was so easy to talk to and had so many good ideas for her to consider.  It was “A Major Relief”.

The Assessment

What you will take is a career assessment and exploration tool that uses John Holland’s RIASEC theory. The assessment asks questions about aspirations, activities, competencies, and level of interest in a variety of occupations. It captures students’ personalities, skills, and interests.

Features & Benefits

  • The assessment guides you as you explore occupations and programs of study that might best suit you and lead to job satisfaction.
  • It will generate a fully customized report that allows you to sort, filter, and print results.
  • It features a Career Finder to explore occupations based on your Summary Code and an Educational Opportunities Finder for you to explore programs of study.
  • Captures your personality, skills, and interests.
  • The theory is based on the idea that if your personality type matches your work environment type, you are more likely to find job fulfillment and career satisfaction.

Developed using the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model and aligns with eight Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP) Quality Indicators: self-awareness, career awareness, postsecondary aspirations, postsecondary options, environmental expectations, academic planning, employability skills, and financial literacy.
